Rustic Home Decor Rustic Bedroom

rustic bedroom ideas

EMILY FOLLOWILL

There's a classic, understated elegance to rustic decor. Often synonymous with farmhouse decor, these rooms are homey and welcoming, with cozy paint colors that make for a cabin-like warmth. The creativity is kicked up a notch in rustic kitchens, where we see unique light fixtures, reclaimed objects, and open shelving galore to display collected-over-time treasures. Rustic bathroom decorating ideas, too, often include vintage-inspired fixtures (think sinks, clawfoot tubs, and faucets).

All of these stunning rustic ideas show up in the bedroom as well, where weathered wood furniture and humble fabrics like grain sack on throw pillows feel right at home against a backdrop of shiplap (be gone, drywall!) and warm hardwood floors.(Every homeowner tackling a reno has their fingers crossed that salvageable wood floors are hiding under that '80s carpet!)

A mostly neutral palette keeps the mood calm in rustic bedrooms, and an overall unfussy sensibility prevails—until it doesn't. There are no hard-and-fast rules. Rustic decorating can go in any direction, from the more primitive to traditional to modern (and in most cases, a combination of these). For example, a clean-lined painted bed mingles with mismatched nightstands. Reclaimed wood ceiling beams and rough, exposed stone walls live happily with soft, traditional floral fabrics. This anything-goes approach is perhaps why rustic decorating is trending—and here to stay for good.

White Done Right

Floor-to-ceiling white could read cold and sterile, but add a sculptural iron bed, an old wooden hamper and narrow antique piece as bedside tables, along with neutral-toned, luxurious linens, and the otherwise primitive space becomes downright soothing.

Fun fact: The folk art canvas above the bed was created by women who were learning how to sew.

Reclaimed Castle

When two Texas homeowners, who both happen to be antiques dealers, built a house from the ground up with reclaimed wood, iron, and tin materials, the result is a one-of-a-kind farmhouse with "washed and worn rustic elegance." In this sizable master suite, secondhand materials, as well as furniture and accessories, take center stage.

Lakeside Rustic

Wide-set paneled walls painted a crisp white in the master bedroom recall the style often found in old Lake Michigan cottages. Leaving wall-joists exposed was a historic look that originated out of necessity (as an inexpensive way to cover wall seams) that is now favored as an architectural detail.

A wooden four-poster bed with simple lines centered on the wall gives the room symmetry along with matching lamps and a pair of framed silhouettes, while mismatched bedside tables lend a less formal, laid-back vibe.

Campy and Cozy

It doesn't get more rustic than walls made from stone quarried on the property, as seen in this circa 1930s farmhouse. Upholstering the ceiling in landscape-grade burlap softens the hard edges while maintaining a rustic, campy feel. Cots outfitted with wool throws and a pair of pillows make for a comfy napping spot.

A contrasting gray paint highlights the architectural details. Dark windows and door frames bring a modern, sleek touch to the space.

This room is a great example of rustic living at its most sophisticated. Natural-colored grasscloth covers the walls while soft traditional curtains soften the space.
